A Laurel Highlands School District teacher is facing several charges after allegedly recording a conversation with a student without that student’s knowledge and sharing it with another student through text message.
During a press conference Friday, Fayette County District Attorney Richard Bower announced that Ashley Thurby Kolesar, 33, had been arrested and arraigned Thursday night and was facing felony charges including criminal use of a communication facility, intercept of communications and disclosing intercept of communications.
According to Bower, a student had approached Kolesar in her classroom to discuss his grade in her class. Kolesar privately recorded the conversation and later shared it with a 17-year-old male student.
The two mocked the student in the video without that student’s consent.
“As a teacher who has a child come in and wants to have a discussion about his or her grade, it’s confidential,” Bower said. “You don’t go out and make fun of it.
You don’t go out and distribute it. You don’t go out and record it. That young man trusted her. His trust was violated.”
This announcement comes after the school district had heard about a potentially inappropriate relationship between Kolesar and the 17-year-old student.
