The University of Illinois basketball player accused of rape and sexual battery made his first appearance in front of a Kansas judge.
Terrence Shannon Jr. was not physically in the courtroom. He appeared via Zoom.
Douglas County authorities charged Terrence Shannon Jr. with rape last month. The alleged incident happened in September while Shannon was attending the U of I football game against Kansas.
While he didn’t enter a plea today the judge set a preliminary hearing for next month.
The senior is fighting to get on the university’s basketball team.
The university suspended him pending the outcome of the criminal trial. His attorneys are asking a federal judge to overturn the suspension.
He will be back in court for the rape charges on Feb. 23. He’s expected to enter a plea of not guilty. Douglas County officials said the preliminary hearing is expected to last at least half a day.
