A Georgia man trying to steal a catalytic converter was found dead Tuesday morning—crushed by the car he was trying to rob.
The Chatham County Police Department found Matthew Smith, 32, dead underneath the car at Prestige Auto Sales at around 9:15 a.m., according to WSAV.
Smith had a history of being arrested in Chatham County, according to WSAV.
Police don’t normally share every death in Chatham County. But the county’s police chief, Jeff Hadley, said the department chose to publicize this one as a deterrent for would-be catalytic converter thieves, WSAV said.
Catalytic converters help cars clean their exhaust, according to NPR.
Its parts are made of precious metals like palladium and platinum, and because they are located on the exterior of the car’s underside, they are easy to steal.
