VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala.
UPDATE 4/27 8:23 p.m.: Homewood Police have identified the person who allegedly caused a fatal car crash on Lakeshore Parkway Monday night after fleeing Vestavia Hills police.
Sgt. John Carr says 28-year-old Jordan Ricks, of Pelham, is wanted for murder and leaving the scene of an accident.
Ricks has yet to be found and Homewood PD says it is utilizing all assets to locate him.
Homewood Police ask for anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact Sgt. Cameron Beedle at 205-332-6200 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777 immediately.
Update 4/27: The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as Robyn Naftel Herring, 42, of Homewood.
An innocent person is dead after a man fleeing Vestavia Hills police drove into oncoming traffic Monday evening, prompting a multi-agency search near Lakeshore.
VHPD Chief Dan Rary says officers were conducting a traffic stop on I-65 near Alford Avenue around 6:35 p.m. Monday when the person being stopped left the scene and continued north on I-65.
Rary says a Vestavia Hills officer was attempting to catch up to the suspect’s vehicle when he saw it exit onto Lakeshore Parkway. When the officer took the same exit, he saw the suspect’s vehicle had crashed into oncoming traffic. He stopped and began rendering aid to the victims.
Homewood Police Sgt. John Carr says a Homewood officer was patrolling near the scene and saw the wreck, which involved a blue Jeep. That officer stopped to help, but one of the people inside of the Jeep was pounced dead at the scene.
Carr says the suspect fled the scene on foot toward the woods south of Lakeshore, causing a multi-agency search involving more Homewood officers and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office STAR 1 Helicopter. As of 9:00 p.m. Monday., the suspect was still on the loose.
Carr says the suspect is a Black male who was last seen wearing black pants and no shirt.
The Homewood Police Department is leading the investigation into the fatal wreck.
