The incident began shortly before 9 p.m. Friday in Midfield when a Flock Safety camera – a license plate reader – hit on a stolen Ford F-150 in the city of Midfield.
Midfield police Sgt. Michael Jeffries said an officer tried to stop the pickup truck, but the female driver fled at a high right of speed.
A short pursuit was initiated but the officer was unable to keep up with the truck and had lost sight of it.
The officer was calling off the chase when the woman veered into an opposing lane of traffic on Bessemer Super Highway, heading away from Midfield toward Bessemer.
The fleeing driver struck an oncoming motorist. That driver, another woman who was the lone occupant of her vehicle, was ejected. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
The driver of the stolen pickup was checked out by paramedics on the scene and cleared to be taken into custody. Her identity has not yet been released.
Midfield police are investigating the criminal aspect of the incident, involving the stolen vehicle.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office accident reconstruction team is investigating the fatal crash.
