Doris Espinoza-Rodriguez, 38, has been charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated child abuse, and two counts of attempted felony murder and placed in the Osceola County Jail.
Rodriguez got into an argument with her boyfriend on Jan. 17 and drove to confront him at his house where his 14-year-old boy and 10-year-old girl were staying.
The children were flown to Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital in Orlando, where Lopez said they are recovering and improving.
“The 14-year-old tried to intervene, got stabbed, and called 911,” Lopez said.
“It’s amazing what kids can do when in that position. He probably saved the life of his sister while getting stab wounds himself. He’s a true hero.”
He said he believed Espinoza-Rodriguez originally lived in the home as someone who was renting a room and began a casual relationship with the father, and that she had domestic charges in Arizona.
“I don’t know why you wouldn’t do a background check on someone renting a room in your home with your children. It sounds like she lost it and went nuts,” Lopez said. “It looks like she has some issues.”
Espinoza-Rodriguez is set to make a court appearance on Thursday.
