Bloomington police have arrested a woman accused of murdering a man at a local homeless encampment after an argument inside his tent.
The Bloomington Police Department announced Friday that officers had arrested 41-year-old transient woman Evelynn L. Kuuleilehaunani in connection to the shooting death of 52-year-old Curtis Butler. She now faces a felony murder charge, BPD said.
Police were initially called around 1:45 p.m. on Jan. 9 to a wooded area near Wheeler Mission for a potential shooting.
Upon arrival, officers found Butler inside a tent in the 200 block of S. Westplex Avenue suffering from a gunshot wound. He was later pronounced dead.
BPD said officers spoke with several witnesses in the area who reported hearing multiple gunshots nearby before calling 911. Some of the witnesses were able to identify a suspect.
Bystanders told police that the suspect, identified as Kuuleilehaunani, had been in a relationship with Butler and that the two had been heard arguing near his tent prior to the shots being fired.
One witness reported seeing Kuuleilehaunani standing outside Butler’s tent, arguing and holding a revolver.
