Stockton police are encouraging people to be careful when going out at night as they’ve noticed most of the city’s unsolved homicides have a pattern. Now, neighbors are reacting to the warning.
While there is no evidence of a serial killer, Stockton police chief Stanley McFadden on Wednesday took note of public speculation about one. He also said that detectives analyzing crime data pointed out that some of the recent homicides have happened either during the night or early morning in poorly lit areas where there is no security camera. The victims were also often alone.
Five unprovoked murders in the past several months appear to be the work of one person, according to the Stockton, California, Police Department.
Authorities are searching for a person of interest tied to the five slayings, the first of which occurred on July 8. All of the victims were men and all were alone at the time they were fatally shot, police said.
“Yes, I am scared. Everybody is scared,” said Harmail Singh, visiting the Sikh Temple in Stockton, near where one of those recent homicides happened.
“To be honest with you, I do feel safe I even walk sometimes. Comeback over here, it’s cool,” said Chris Carrillo, who lives in the Lincoln Village neighborhood where a victim was gunned down and killed earlier this week.
The Stockton Police Department said in a release that it is gathering a team of detectives, crime analysts, camera room operators, evidence technicians, and task force officers on the county, state and federal levels.
Currently, there is nothing indicating if these homicides were committed by one or multiple people. According to the police department, there have been 43 homicides so far this year compared to 32 at this same time last year. The clearance rate for solving homicides is roughly 50%.
The killings all happened at night or in the early morning hours.
