Stew Leonard’s is recalling a brand of its cookies after a consumer ate an incorrectly labeled box of cookies and died from a peanut allergy.
The victim, a woman from New York City in her 20s, ate the cookies at a party and died from an allergic reaction on January 11, according to ABC News.
The Vanilla Florentine Cookies, which contained peanuts, were sold at a store in Connecticut and were improperly labeled. They were sold between November 6 and December 31, 2023, with a sell by date of Jan. 5, 2024.
Stew Leonard’s is warning those with peanut allergies not to consume the cookies and immediately discard them or return them to their place of purchase.
The cookies were produced by a wholesaler in Long Island, New York, by the name of Cookies United and repackaged to be sold in Stew Leonard’s stores.
As a precautionary measure, the company removed all baked items produced by Cookies United from store shelves in Connecticut.
