States Ceding “Shocking Degree of Control” to Apple with ID Scheme

Residents in eight US states will be able to store IDs and driver licenses on their iPhone, with critics slamming the control the tech giant now has over conditions and costs.

CNBC reports that Apple has “sole control” of several aspects previously controlled by Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah. Not only do the states have to maintain the Apple Wallet feature, but it will come out of the taxpayer’s pocket.

Official bodies must allocate resources and manpower to keep devices compatible and support the project, on a “timeline determined by Apple.” States are also required to market the new feature.

Does it mean Apple will now be essential for holding IDs?
