Sixteen people were injured, with three teens critically injured, in a DUI crash Saturday night involving a semi-truck and a Chicago-based St. Ignatius College Prep School bus.
After the St. Ignatus JV hockey team finished a tournament in Culver, Indiana, they boarded a school bus and were on their way back to their hotel around 8:00 p.m. when they came across a semi-truck with New Jersey registration that had run a red light and was driving erratically.
Simultaneously, police reported receiving a phone call about a semi-truck speeding, swerving into other lanes, and driving off the road.
According to Warsaw police, the semi-truck collided with the school bus on US Route 30 and Center Street in Warsaw, Indiana. The bus was on its side when police arrived.
According to Warsaw police, the semi-truck driver continued west and came to a stop after driving off the road and into a ditch.
There were 26 people on the school bus, including hockey players, teachers, and coaches, and one student was reportedly ejected as the bus made a northbound turn onto Center Street from the eastbound left turn lane during the crash. Sixteen of the 23 students on the bus were hurt.
Victor Santos, the semi-truck driver from Brooklyn, failed a sobriety test and was arrested on DUI-related charges.
According to a spokesperson for St. Ignatus College Prep, three students underwent surgery and are now recovering.
