RawNews1st – Big shootout inside River Oaks mall and some people been shot.
Police responded to a report of shots fired at the mall around 12:15 p.m., Calumet City Police Chief Kevin Kolosh said in a press conference Wednesday afternoon.
They was shooting as we walking in I grabbed my baby and ran through the other side… out the door… police everywhere.
Police said that victim was a security guard working for a jewelry store at the mall. Police said he was transported to a local trauma center, but did not have an update on his condition.
A second male victim sustained a minor hand injury from broken glass and was treated on the scene, police said.
The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, police said. It’s unknown if anything was taken from the jewelry store.
“It’s unknown if it was targeted, but it appears as though it was isolated,” Kolosh said.
The mall went into lockdown and shoppers were escorted by police out of the mall, which remains closed. Police said they are now interviewing witnesses and gathering surveillance video from inside the mall.
The South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force and Calumet City police are handling the investigation.
