Saudi Arabia Appoints First-Ever Ambassador to Palestine

The arrival of the Saudi envoy comes as the US and Israel have renewed a push for normalization between Tel Aviv and the kingdom

Saudi Arabia appointed on 12 August its first-ever ambassador to Palestine, coming in the wake of a renewed US-sponsored push for normalization between Israel and the kingdom.

The newly appointed ambassador, Nayef al-Sudairi, handed over his credentials to Majdi al-Khalidi, advisor to the President of the Palestinian Authority (PA), WAFA news agency reported. A ceremony was held at the Palestinian embassy in Jordan.

Sudairi is also the kingdom’s ambassador to Jordan and will maintain his duties as Non-Resident Ambassador and Consul-General of Saudi Arabia to the State of Palestine.

“[The] timing of the decision reflects the interest of the brotherly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the Palestinian cause,” WAFA cited a Palestinian Foreign Ministry statement.

Coinciding with increased talk about a Saudi-Israeli normalization deal in the making, some have “expressed fear the move could be part of a larger US-engineered plan,” Jerusalem Post wrote on 13 August.

Nonetheless, the Saudi decision has sparked frustration in Israel.
