Russian hacker takes down Royal Family’s official website in cyber ‘attack’

A Russian hacker has taken responsibility after the Royal Family‘s official website went offline for around 90 minutes.

The URL royal.uk was displaying an error message this morning, while hacktivist KillMilk posted news of their apparently successful “attack”. They added the supposed takedown was an “attack on paedophiles”.

It appears to have gone down from just after 10.20am but is now back live, though was quite slow to load initially.

There have also reportedly been similar attacks on public transport systems today in Birmingham, Brighton, South Tyneside and South Yorkshire. It is unclear if they are all linked to KillMilk.

KillMilk is the leader of the Russian hacktivist DDoS collective KillNet, and earlier this year announced on Telegram the establishment of “Black Skills,” a Private Military Hacking Company.

The name is believed to be inspired by private military companies in Russia – primarily the Wagner Group – which have been used during Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Some reports suggest KillMilk’s aspiration is for the Kremlin to use the resources of the cyber mercenary group.

KillNet is known for its Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) campaigns against countries supporting Ukraine, especially NATO countries, since the start of the war in February last year.
