Robot Performs Keyhole Surgery Without Human Help – First Time Ever

Delicate keyhole surgery has been carried out on a pig by a robot – the Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot (STAR) – mostly without any human guidance for the first time ever.

A team of mechanical engineering experts from Johns Hopkins University and the Children’s National Hospital in Washington DC developed STAR to perform “one of the most intricate and delicate tasks in surgery.”

The STAR can adapt to unexpected obstacles in real time and performed the surgery on four animals with better results than humans, according to the team’s senior author Dr Axel Krieger.
