The NBA has announced that they have suspended the Phoenix Mercury and Suns owner Robert Sarver for 1 year based on league investigation.
He’s also been fined $10 million and has to complete a training program based on respect and appropriate workplace conduct.
The independent investigation included interviews with 320 people and evaluation of over 80,000 documents.
The NBA says it will donate Robert Sarver’s $10 million fine to organizations that are committed to addressing race and gender-based issues in and outside the workplace.
Sarver also “engaged in demeaning and harsh treatment of employees, including by yelling and cursing at them.”
Last October, Sarver and the Suns issued statements in advance of a forthcoming report on the franchise. Sarver said that “some of the claims I find repugnant to my nature and to the character of the Suns/Mercury workplace and I can tell you they never, ever happened.”
Sarver led a group that purchased the Suns for $401 million in 2004.
Tim Bontemps of the Washington Post reported in 2017 that Sarver might be open to selling the franchise and that “the league would likely be quite happy if Sarver chose to move on” because of the Suns’ prolonged futility.
Sarver refuted the report.Phoenix’s fortunes on the court improved in the intervening years as well, with the team reaching the 2021 NBA Finals.
