REvil hackers arrested in Romania

Two hackers were arrested last week for allegedly using hired REvil ransomware to generate $500K in payments after extorting over 5,000 victims, according to a press release by Europol Monday.

REvil sold ransomware tools to other hackers but its websites suddenly went offline in July, with one customer allegedly using their tools to breach 1,500 businesses to demand a $70MN ransom, but the chief operators of the group have still evaded arrest.

Europol also claims to have locked up a total of seven suspects since February, including three other affiliates, as well as a crackdown operation on REvil ransomware infrastructure.
