RedDoorz receive just $74K fine for 2020 data breach – which leaked personal details of 5.9mn customers
A huge personal data hack at hotel booking site RedDoorz last year saw the personal data of around 5.9mn south-east Asian customers breached in what the Singaporean govt is calling the country’s largest ever data leak.
The Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) fined website operator Commeasure just $74k – significantly less than the $1mn levied for a 2018 health system breach affecting a quarter of the number of victims.
The commission said it had considered hardship on the hospitality sector caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The personal data – which did not include bank details or passwords, the PDPC claimed – was put up for sale on a hacker’s forum, but then taken down.
