The Amherst Police Department has seen an increase in complaints of thefts from organizations who collect donations for the purpose of selling and/or giving to customers/clients at a reduced price or for free.
Once turned over to such organizations, these donated items become the property of the organization until they sell or give it away.
During the month of October 2022, Amherst Police have received 14 complaints of this nature and police are in the process of identifying other persons who have taken property that had been donated.

Over the past 4 days there have been 7 such complaints. It has not been uncommon to have multiple thefts from such locations in a single day with the same person returning, often in a vehicle.
Police and property representatives are reviewing surveillance video from various properties and will be following up with additional charges as warranted.
The unauthorized taking of donated items is theft. If anyone has information about these incidents, please contact the Amherst Police at (902) 667-8600 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (T.I.P.S.)
