Over ten thousand people protested against the AfD party conference in Riesa. Our editorial team spoke to some participants about their impressions.
Numerous people gathered in Riesa to demonstrate against the AfD party conference. The police spoke of around 10,000 demonstrators, the nationwide alliance “resist” as the initiator of the protests spoke of 15,000.
Individual groups of demonstrators who arrived from all over Germany during the night and early in the morning initially blocked the access roads to the city and to the venue of the party conference, the “WT Arena”.
The participants are of course very happy that so many people have come to the Saxon town for the protest. “The demo is huge, we have been very successful so far. You can really feel the solidarity here,” one demonstrator tells us. Another thinks “the atmosphere is great too.
There are no differences between the different factions that are walking around here.” Another thinks: “It is important to send a signal against the AfD.”
Because of the blockades, the party conference, at which AfD party and parliamentary group leader Alice Weidel was chosen as the top candidate for the early federal election, began two hours late. Many of the approximately 600 delegates were stuck in the traffic jams outside and inside the city caused by the sit-ins.
