CHILE: President Pinera ESCAPES Impeachment Trial after Senate Vote
The Chilean Senate has rejected a proposal to impeach President Sebastian Pinera over alleged irregularities in the sale of a mining company, after the lower house successfully passed the vote last week.
Although the vote Tuesday was 24 in favor, 18 against and one abstention – at least 29 votes were required for the impeachment to take place. Pinera could have faced up to 5 years in prison if impeached.
Pinera was reportedly involved in the controversial sale of a mining company in 2010 when he was serving as president for his first term. Offshore transactions regarding the deal were revealed in the Pandora Papers.
