Politicians & Publishers being Pushed to take “EXTREME POSITIONS” to stay Relevant?
Major political parties and publishers have claimed Facebook’s News Feed forcefully pushes them toward producing negative and polarizing content to retain engagement.
Buzzfeed Chief Executive Jonah Peretti points to the success of one of his site’s viral articles, “21 Things That Almost All White People are Guilty of Saying,” as one such instance from 2018.
The polarizing article garnered 13,000 shares and 16,000 comments in a short amount of time, and has been largely described as “rage bait.”
In Poland, “one party’s social media management team estimates that they have shifted the proportion of their posts from 50/50 positive/negative to 80 percent negative, explicitly as a function of the change to the algorithm,” to get more attention.
