Chelsea’s Police Chief, Shawn McKibbin has been arrested, accused of creating fake bank documents, when he and his wife were trying to buy a home.
The affidavit for Shawn McKibbin says he and his wife looked at the house in August and made a cash offer of $329,000, saying the money was in a trust he could access and a contract was signed August 8th.
It says he provided proof of funds more than once, providing documents that showed a bank balance of around $460,000.
It says he wrote a $5,000 check for earnest money but it later bounced and he provided numerous excuses about why: blaming it on the bank, saying someone had been moving funds in and out of his bank and the feds were investigating and froze his accounts and he never provided a money order or cashier’s check to cover the $5,000, despite being asked repeatedly to do so.
It says because his realtor believed McKibbin about having the money, she offered to pay the $5,000 for him and did so.
It says by September, McKibbin admitted he had created fake documents showing he had a large sums of money in the bank, in order to buy time and keep the contract on the house, open.
It says at no time did his account actually have more than $5,500 in it and the day he wrote the $5,000 check, his account had less than $1,200 in it.
It says he has never paid back the realtor.
He’s charged with attempting to obtain money by false pretense and use of a computer for fraud.
