Commonwealth Attorney Rob Sanders says the officers involved in a shooting that left one man dead have been cleared of any wrongdoing. On Feb. 20, Randall Lockaby, 57, pulled a gun on officers after he was stopped for a traffic violation on I-75 South, according to Kentucky State Police.
Villa Hills officer Jacob Bolton initiated the traffic stop that night around 11 p.m., Sanders said Friday. Another officer, Sean Dooley, responded to the stop later. Sanders said Bolton was inside his police cruiser preparing paperwork, possibly for a ticket or a warning, when Dooley arrived.
Lockaby was a convicted felon out of Pennsylvania, meaning he can’t legally own guns, according to Sanders. The officers fired their weapons, hitting Lockaby, KSP says. The 57-year-old was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Florence where he died, troopers say.
Sanders said Friday the actions of the officers were lawful and in self-defense. Neither officer will face any charges and Sanders says the case is closed, as far as he is concerned. “These officers acted lawfully,” Sanders explained.
“They acted in self-defense and quite frankly they acted heroically in the protection of one another and their own lives. Therefore, officer Dooley and officer Bolton have been cleared of any wrongdoing in this incident. As far as I’m concerned this case is closed.”
