Polish PM announces plan to construct physical barrier along entire border with Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave
Poland will build a fence along its entire border with Russia’s Kaliningrad Oblast, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said in an interview with Polish regional radio station Polskie Radio Olsztyn on Sept. 15.
Asked whether Poland would build a fence on the border with Russia like the one that is being constructed on the border with Belarus, Morawiecki said that first an electronic border protection system would be created.
“But later we will create an appropriate physical barrier in certain areas, and finally along the entire length of the border with Königsberg Oblast, the former Kaliningrad Oblast,” Morawiecki said.
Radio Olsztyn said that the construction of the “electronic firewall” on the border with Russia was nearing completion.
According to Poland’s Ministry of Interior and Administration, all work should be completed by the turn of September-October.
The ministry said that this would make it possible to fully monitor the border.
