One person is being sought and another person has been charged in connection with a multivehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Topsfield that left one man dead and another man suffering from life-threatening injuries, according to the Massachusetts State Police.
State police investigators said that at about 4:17 p.m., a 2008 GMC Acadia SUV was traveling on I-95 south when — for reasons still under investigation — the vehicle suddenly and rapidly decelerated and came to a stop near Mile Marker 71.
At the same time, a 2007 Chevrolet Impala that was traveling behind the GMC Acadia began to brake in an attempt to avoid hitting the stopped SUV, according to state police. The Impala veered to its left toward the grass median as it decelerated, and state police said a 2006 Chevrolet Express van traveling in the leftmost of the four southbound lanes on I-95 began to slow down and move to its left in an attempt to avoid a collision with the Impala, but that attempt was unsuccessful.
State police said the Impala struck the van, which caused the van to leave the roadway and slide across the grass median and eventually roll over one-and-a-half times.
Two of the four occupants of the van were ejected as the vehicle rolled over, according to authorities. One of the passengers who was ejected, 44-year-old Valkisergio Costa Silva, of Centerville, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second passenger who was ejected from the vehicle, a 30-year-old man, suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was flown to Boston Medical Center by a Boston MedFlight helicopter.
State police said the van’s third passenger, a 53-year-old man, suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken to an area hospital by ambulance. The driver of the van, a 32-year-old Yarmouth man, was transported to an area hospital by ambulance to be treated for minor injuries.
