A shopper has shared a picture of a display of coffins for sale at a Costco store
A regular shopper shared a picture of the display at the North Lakes store near Brisbane. In the picture, coffins and urns are can be seen placed right next to a barbecue station.
Costco opened its first Australian store in Melbourne’s Docklands precinct in 2009. Now there are stores in Victoria, NSW, Queensland, and one warehouse each in Adelaide, Perth, and Canberra.
The picture sparked a flurry of comments with some amused and others saying it was in ‘awful taste’.
‘Economy class, the leg room is a bugger,’ one commenter replied.
‘I did a double-take when I spotted them for sale. Not quite what I expected,’ another added.
‘Do they deliver or do you need to drive away with it strapped to your car roof?’ a third wrote.
Coffins bought from funeral parlours vary in price but are often several thousand dollars.
The Costco coffins retail from $899.99, while an urn will set customers back $159.99 and their caskets range from $3099.99 up to $1549.99.
The retailer has been selling the items since 2015 in Australia and for years in their American stores.
