The Pentagon confirmed the leak Monday to Fox News and acknowledged the issue comes from the U.S. military’s “.MIL” domain name used for emails is commonly mistyped as “.ML.”
The exposure of sensitive information includes diplomatic documents, tax returns, passwords and the travel details of top officers, according to The Financial Times.
The Branch of Safeguard knows about this issue and takes generally unapproved revelations of Controlled Public safety Data or Controlled Unclassified Data genuinely,” the Pentagon said in a proclamation.
“DoD has executed approach, preparing, and specialized controls to guarantee that messages from the “.mil” space are not conveyed to wrong areas.
Such messages are impeded before they leave the .mil space and the shipper is informed that they should approve the email locations of the expected beneficiaries.
The space issue was first revealed very nearly 10 years prior by Johannes Zuurbier, a Dutch web business person, who has been gathering misled messages since January with an end goal to convince the U.S. to view the issue in a serious way, the Monetary Times detailed.
