Pentagon releases footage of ‘honest mistake’ airstrike that killed 10 civilians
The Pentagon released on Wednesday newly declassified images showing the August 29 US drone strike in Kabul that mistakenly killed 10 Afghan civilians.
Aerial footage shows blasts at the site of the compound said to be the location of the strike. People are also seen running along the streets surrounding the building.
The strike was carried out at the end of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan during the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul. The Pentagon at first defended the attack, saying the US military had targeted a militant of the self-proclaimed Islamic State in Khorasan Province (ISIS-K).
The US military later admitted their mistake in targeting the wrong man, also acknowledging that civilians had been killed in the strike. Among those killed were at least seven children.
The Pentagon in a report described the incident as an ‘honest mistake’ but recommended no disciplinary action be taken against any military personnel.
