Deadly Storm Leaves Extensive Damage
On July 15th, 2024 around 10 PM, a powerful bow echo storm complex hit the region leaving wide spread damage across the entire area.
Tornado sirens sounded across the region as a powerful storm blasted through with 70+ mph straight line winds and possible unconfirmed tornado damage reports in multiple locations.
We have received numerous pictures of roofs ripped off buildings and homes in Cedar Lake and Lansing, IL.
A Ring camera in Lowell also captured what appears to be a funnel cloud racing across the sky that could be seen in the lightning flashes.
A post in a Lowell group states two people driving home did witness a small rope tornado on the ground north of town as they travelled on 41.
Trees also fell on multiple homes leaving residents scattering for cover and attempting to stop rain from coming through roofs as seen in this video in Munster. Cedar Lake Police have confirmed a fatality after a tree fell into a home on 141st.
Power flashes could be seen across the sky as the winds ripped power lines down and trees toppled onto poles.
As of 12 AM NIPSCO is reporting over 55,000 customers without power.
NWS Chicago put out multiple Tornado Warnings for the area including a few that stated tornadoes on the ground or rotation observed.
Radar Storm Velocity showed multiple tight couplets of rotation in the line as it passed it over.
Multiple survey teams are expected to be out for the next week covering most of the NWS Chicago Offices coverage area to confirm any tornadoes.
Police are warning drivers to use caution if they travel tonight due to the amount of debris and wires down across the area. Power outages are also making things difficult for travel.
