RawNews1st – More than 1,000 have died since mid-June from flooding that a senior official called a “climate-induced humanitarian disaster.”
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-chairman and former president Asif Zardari has said that Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari will not leave the flood-affected people alone.
In a statement, Zardari said that the situation is very painful due to floods and rains. “If my health allowed, I would have been with the victims,” he added.
He demanded that the government of Pakistan should help the poor by mobilising Baitul Mal and the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) should be expanded to help the poor in every possible way.
Note: Since June 2022, floods caused by monsoon rains, negligence of respective departments, and melting glaciers have killed at least 1,128 people, including 340 children, and injured over 1,700 in Pakistan.
In August 2022, six military officers were killed in a helicopter crash during a flood relief operation.
The “unprecedented” weather event has affected at least 33 million people, with Pakistan’s Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman describing it as “the worst humanitarian disaster of this decade.”
