Washington – Sportmix brand’s dry dog foods are the main products in question, and per the FDA, poor safety standards have led to illness and even death in numerous dogs.Â
The Food & Drug Administration issued a warning letter to the company after violations were discovered during inspections at the manufacturing plant. A serious food recall has been announced affecting brands of pet food made by Midwestern Pet Food Inc.
The issue is the presence of a dead aflatoxin which was found after customers complained of suspected mycotoxin poisoning in their pets. At least 130 pets have died in instances linked to these products.
Right now, the FDA has published a comprehensive letter stating all of Midwestern Pet Food’s health and safety violations as well as their poor responses when these issues were initially brought to their attention.Â
Following the initial inspection at the Midwestern Pet Food manufacturing facility in Oklahoma, the Food & Drug Administration launched investigations at the company’s New York, Indiana, and Illinois locations. After these tests, additional products were recalled after traces of salmonella were found.Â
If you are a pet owner who feeds your animal dry food, check out the list on the FDA website outlining all of the brand names, package details, and official codes of the recalled products. Dispose of any questionable products you may find immediately and watch out for any symptoms of infection from aflatoxin in your pets like sluggishness, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice, unexplained bruising or bleeding, and diarrhea.
