One Baltimore City employee was killed and another is in critical condition after a double shooting in North Baltimore late Friday afternoon, police said.
Police were called to the intersection of York Road and East Cold Spring Lane around 7:23 p.m. and found two Public Works Department employees, who had been operating a sanitation vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds, according to Police Commissioner Michael Harrison.
One or more perpetrators approached the employees, and “there was some type of exchange” before the pair were shot and injured, Harrison said.
Both were taken to a local hospital, where one succumbed to his injuries, according to law enforcement.
During a news conference on the scene, Harrison said it wasn’t clear why the sanitation workers, who have not been identified, had driven the city vehicle to the 4600 block of York Road.
Harrison urged anyone with information to report it to police.
“At 7:23 p.m., it was still daylight,” Harrison said. “Many people were out. So we know someone saw something, heard something and knows something.”
Around 8 p.m., police tape sealed off the block of York Road near Willow Avenue. The sanitation vehicle was still parked with its lights on near the sidewalk in the southbound lane.
“We have to be fed up, we have to be pissed off,” Mayor Brandon Scott said during a news conference. “You can’t continue to say you want our city to be better and to be cleaner if you will literally be quiet when someone who gave his life to clean your city gets shot and murdered,” he said. “Everyone has to be angry.”
Police were still searching the area for evidence, he said.
