RawNews1st – Officials verified that an on-duty police officer in St. John, Indiana, opened fire on an off-duty Hammond police officer overnight.
According to St. John police, an officer was “checking on an abandoned unoccupied suspicious vehicle” at West 93rd Avenue and Cline Avenue around 2:30 a.m.
Tuesday. According to St. John police, the officer was standing on the lane’s shoulder when he was nearly hit by a car.
According to St. John police, the officer feared for his life and opened fire on the vehicle, which drove away from the area. The officer then pursued the motorist and apprehended him.
That driver looks to be a Hammond police officer on leave.
According to Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott, Jr.’s Facebook post, the Hammond officer was on his way to his home in St. John when he noticed the St. John cop conducting a traffic stop.
When the St. John cop opened fire on him, the Hammond officer moved to the opposite side of the road, according to the mayor.
The off-duty Hammond officer was not hurt, and McDermott claims he did nothing wrong.
“Police officers, like the St. John officer who decided to use deadly force in this case, are a danger to society and don’t deserve to wear the badge of Hoosier Law Enforcement.” McDermott said in his post, clearly agitated.
The Hammond Police Department validated the mayor’s description of events on Facebook.
Reporters reached out to the St. John Police Department for comment, but has yet to get a response.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the officer-involved shooting and stated that the incident is being investigated. They had nothing further to say.
