Officer Shot While Responding to a Domestic Disturbance at 7534 Bayview Club Drive.
The following information is a summary of the officer shot which occurred at 7534 Bayview Drive on August 11, 2021 while responding to a domestic disturbance.
The information provided is preliminary and subject to change. (Content was gathered from the Police CAD and the preliminary investigation.)
• On August 11, 2021, just before 9:00 p.m., officers with the IMPD North District were dispatched to 7534 Bayview Drive for a domestic disturbance.
• Officers attempted to make contact with the individuals inside, but they received no response.
• An officer then began to check the perimeter of the apartment at which time the suspect fired shots at the officers striking the officer in the leg.
The injured officer then took cover until additional officers were able to safely remove him from the area. Officers on scene rendered aid to the officer and applied a tourniquet.
• The Special Weapons And Tactics team (SWAT) responded to the scene and began to establish a perimeter. Shortly after SWAT’s arrival, officers received information that additional injured people were still inside the apartment.
SWAT officers made entry and located three additional people suffering from injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. An adult female and a juvenile female were both transported to area hospitals and listed in critical condition.
The alleged suspect an adult male was located and transported to Eskenazi Hospital. The suspect was pronounced deceased shortly after his arrival by medical professionals.
• Preliminary information leads investigators to believe the suspect suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No IMPD Officers fired their service weapons during this incident.
• Three additional juveniles were able to escape the apartment safely with no injuries.
• There are no ongoing threats to the public at this time.
• Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services, Lawrence Fire Department, Fisher Police Department and Indiana State Police responded to the scene and provided assistance to IMPD.
• No additional officers were injured during this incident.
• The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) responded to the scene to conduct the criminal investigation.
