NYP Eric AdamsĀ has been charged by federal prosecutorsĀ in Manhattan, a stunning blow to the first-term mayor who once proclaimed himself the future of the Democratic Party.
The precise charges are not publicly known as the indictment remains under seal.
The indictment caps a year of deepening legal and political peril for the cityās second Black leader, rewriting the storyĀ of his first campaign for City Hall and casting a pall over his bid for a second term.
In the past two weeks, Adams has lost his police commissioner, his schools chancellor, and health commissioner.
This move from prosecutors working for Damian Williams, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, comes just weeks after his office executed a series of raids on top members of the Adams administration, including two deputy mayors and the police commissioner at the time, many of whom have close and personal relationships with the mayor.
Sources close to Adams said late Wednesday that the mayor had not been told of the expected indictment.
Following news of the indictment, cops set up barriers outside Gracie Mansion, the mayorās home, and forced reporters back from the house.
Details about the exact accusations remained unclear, but are believed to be connected to allegations of the Turkish government illegally funneling money into his mayoral campaign in exchange for approval of the Turkish consulate in Manhattan, according to sources.
Itās also uncertain how the indictment is related to a sweeping set of Sept. 4 raids that targeted several high-profile Adams administration officials, which sent City Hall into a weeks-long tailspin as news reports emerged of investigations focused on alleged corruption by the mayorās inner circle.
By Wednesday morning, word had spread that a āseniorā City Hall official soon would be indicted, sending staff into a panic throughout the day, insiders said.
The indictmentās unveiling will come after federal prosecutors recently demanded City Hall cough up all communications between the Adams administration, Turkey and five other foreign countries amid the long-running probe.
Adamsā 2021 campaign had previously been served with subpoenas for information on its campaign donations ā specifically those that had ties to Turkey, sources told The Post.
