Nigeria to end 7-month suspension of Twitter
Africa’s most populous nation has ended its ban on the platform, after Twitter agreed to meet govt conditions on prohibited publications in accordance with local law and tax.
Last June Nigeria suspended its operations for ‘undermining corporate existence’ – literally days after deleting a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari that threatened residents over damaging public property.
“The new global reality is that digital platforms and their operators wield enormous influence over the fabric of our society, social interaction and economic choices. These platforms can be used as either a tool or a weapon,” the government said on Wednesday.
