New York Gov Declares Racism “Public Health Emergency”
Amid an uptick of anti-Asian hate crimes during the pandemic, Democratic governor Kathy Hochul has declared racism a “public health crisis” – signing into law legislation aimed at fighting racial injustice.
“For far too long, communities of color in New York have been held back by systemic racism and inequitable treatment,” Hochul said in a statement last week.
The legislation is specifically aiming to address rising discrimination against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
