Police say 54-year-old Emmanuel Harris ran into the convenience store with patrons and employees inside after attempting an armed robbery earlier that evening.
The video shows Harris running into the gas station on Canal Street near South Galvez around 8:30 p.m. on Halloween night.
“Hold the air for me. I got a guy with a gun approaching my vehicle,” an officer said in radio communications.
Harris can be seen ducking behind the counter with a weapon as one employee gets a gun and another makes a call. Harris then climbs over the counter before he is shot in his shoulder and falls to the ground.
Later in the video, New Orleans Police Department SWAT officers swarm the gas station as the last employee inside runs from a freezer.
“When the officers pulled up on the scene, it’s really about what they know in that moment, and one of the things that they knew was that there still was one person inside the store,” said NOPD Deputy Superintendent Keith Sanchez. “The officer that fired his shot one time, what he knew was that the person was in the back of the store, and that’s where the alleged suspect was going towards.”
New Orleans police say the officer who shot Harris was briefly reassigned after the shooting but has since returned to full duty.
Once Harris is released from the hospital, authorities say he will be booked with attempted armed robbery for trying to steal a car earlier that night.
