The Omaha Police Department, Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office, Council Bluffs Police Department, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are investigating a series of incidents involving Matthew Briggs, 41, that occurred in multiple local and state jurisdictions in Nebraska and Iowa.
Omaha Police responded to a southwest Omaha residence shortly before 6 a.m. Saturday for a report of a domestic violence assault.
Police say Briggs physically assaulted a woman after breaking into her home. She was able to run away and call 911 from another home. Briggs was gone before officers arrived.
Minutes after the assault, investigators say Briggs tried to drive his car through the garage door of another Omaha home. He didn’t get in but came back a short time later and drove into the garage door again.
The woman who lived there was not home at the time, but Briggs allegedly shot at a neighbor attempting to check on him.
About 30 minutes later, officers were called to 9927 Essex Drive. When they arrived, they found Steven Donsbach, 52, shot to death. Investigators believe Briggs was the person who pulled the trigger.
Omaha Police immediately began to search for Briggs, using multiple investigative resources and law enforcement personnel.
A resident called 911 Saturday afternoon, indicating they spotted Briggs’ car at Mandan Park near 6000 S 13th Street. When officers arrived, they found the car, but Briggs was gone. A massive manhunt of the area was launched.
Shortly after 3:30 p.m., OPD was notified through 911 of a carjacking south of Mandan Park in Sarpy County. The suspect description matched that of Briggs. Authorities spotted the car he stole, and a pursuit began.
