A woman was arrested and charged with the murder of her 4-year-old twin boys, according to authorities in Cherokee County, North Carolina.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and Cherokee County Emergency Services responded to a home in Murphy, North Carolina, on Saturday after receiving a 911 call.
The father arrived at the home of his separated wife around 10 a.m. to exercise custody of their twin sons, according to authorities. He told authorities that when he arrived, he discovered that his sons were dead.
The mother, Genevieve Ellen Springer, was hospitalized in Georgia and charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
After she was released from the hospital, authorities arrested her in Union County, Georgia. She was taken to the Cherokee County Detention Center in North Carolina on Sunday and is being held without bond.
Officials are investigating the exact day and time that the boys died. Their father told deputies he last saw his sons alive on Feb. 26.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said it hopes autopsies will reveal when the boys died.
“A critical incident debriefing will be held for all first responders involved.
A critical incident debriefing is a facilitator-led group process conducted soon after a traumatic event with individuals considered to be under stress from trauma exposure,” Detective Nolan Queen of the Sheriff’s Office’s Criminal Investigations Division said in a statement.
