Florida Mother Arrested After After 3-Year-Old Boy Drowns In Retention Pond
Myra Santiago, 22, was fighting back tears as she listened to the judge list the charges she faces.
“Aggravated manslaughter of a child and neglect of a child,” a judge said.
“I have a child floating in my pond,” a 911 caller said.
Azriyh Santiago, 3, was found near the apartment he shared with his mom.
“He’s out of the water. Is he breathing? No,” a 911 call said.
He could not be saved.
Police believe he’d been in there several hours, after security cameras at San Marco Apartments saw him out of the apartment and near the water more than six hours earlier.
“The child got out, went downstairs went out by the retention pond and into the water, it was a tragedy beyond words,” Ormond Beach Police Chief Jesse Godfrey said.
Santiago said she came home between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. and picked up her son from a neighbor.
She says around 6 a.m., the 3-year-old asked for his tablet and left her room.
She woke up about the time her son had been found, more than six hours later.
