Mosquito-borne Brain-Inflammation virus spreads from pigs to humans
Australian authorities have issued health alerts for those working with pigs and horses, after a human case of Japanese encephalitis virus was detected in Queensland – along with 3 suspected infections in Victoria.
The virus can cause brain inflammation, and although serious illness is rare, the WHO claims it causes over 20,000 deaths a year.
This is reportedly the first time the virus has been detected in southern Australia.
