70-Year-Old Mom Faces Murder Charges for Holding Man in a Chokehold While Her Daughter Beat Him to Death.

Yolanda R. Lowery, 54, and her 70-year-old mother, Dorothy Lowery, who both live in Canton, are charged with murder in connection with the fatal assault on Jerry L. Morris, 54, that occurred July 30 in the 1200 block of Logan Avenue NW.

City police say they are still trying to determine a possible motive for why a mother and daughter allegedly beat a man to death and how the man’s dead body ended up in Akron.

Yolanda Lowery appeared Oct. 23 via video from the Stark County Jail in Canton Municipal Court, where Magistrate Christy M. Pierson set bond at $1 million.

Canton City Prosecutor Katie Erchick Gilbert said Dorothy Lowery is in custody, but she believes she is in a hospital.

Public defender Tiffany Poirier asked the magistrate to set “reasonable bond.” She advised her client not to talk to anybody about her case.

Erchick Gilbert declined to give a motive or explain how Morris got to Akron.

“I know that they all knew each other. Previously, they had all lived together, but were not living together at the time of the incident,” Erchick Gilbert said.

Morris was found dead from beating injuries on Aug. 1 outside a vacant house in the 100 block of Lake Street in Akron.

Canton Police Chief John Gabbard said in a press release Oct. 22 that investigators from the Akron Police Department contacted Canton police detectives on Aug. 16.

The Canton police complaint alleges that Yolanda caused Morris to die by striking him numerous times. The complaint against Dorothy says she put him in a chokehold.

A status hearing is scheduled for Yolanda on Oct. 28. No hearing is scheduled for Dorothy.
