Mohammed Almaru, 42, beat his daughter Mia Maro, 17 to death, with a steel pole and a mallet in their Tinley Park, Chicago home.
In the days leading up to Mia’s murder, the father and daughter had been arguing over prom. Mohammed originally told his daughter that she could attend prom. He then changed his mind, stating he did not trust Mia.
Besides arguing over prom, on April 26, 2022, Mia was in a minor car accident. She was scared how her father would react and texted her fears to a relative.
She told the relative she was afraid and thought her father might “beat her” or “kill her.”
According to news outlets, on April 29, 2022, Mohammed Almaru was trying to get Mia Maro to tell him information he believed she was concealing from him. It is not clear what this information was regarding.
Mia’s had bruising throughout her body. Investigators discovered a bent metal pole that had blood on it in the kitchen. They also found a rubber mallet in the garage, which had blood on it.
When Mia did not respond to her aunt’s attempts to contact her, she and other family members stopped by the house on May 1, 2022. Almaru answered the door.
After Rhanda entered the residence, Almaru went to another room. Mia’s aunt heard odd gurgling noises coming from the room.
She found Mia’s battered body and Almaru laying next to her. He had self-inflicted wounds on his wrists. It was also discovered he ingested pills in an attempted to end his life.
He was rushed to the hospital and treated. Almaru was questioned on May 2, 2022, after he was stabilized.
Almaru has been charged with first-degree murder and is due back in court on May 9, 2022.
