Officers from the Chicago Police Department responded to reports of shots fired near 114th and Calumet on November 17th, 2022, around 6:40 a.m.
When they arrived, they discovered two teenage boys who had been shot inside the house.
Michael Hence, who was 13 at the time, was shot twice in the chest and neck. He was taken to Comer’s Children Hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries.
Quentin Branch, 13, was found with a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Neighbors reported hearing gunshots and a vehicle driving away when they awoke. They also speculate that the house may have been abandoned.
Curtis Elementary School, located at 115th and State, was attended by both children. Michael was in seventh grade, while Quentin was in eighth.
The school district contacted staff and parents via email, citing their concerns. “During this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with the victims’ families.
As a result of the losses, the school as a whole, and our students in particular, are likely to experience a wide range of emotions, concerns, and questions.
We are heartbroken by these losses and promise to do everything we can to help you and your students.”
Students can see psychologists, social workers, and counselors, among other mental health professionals.
The Chicago Police Department currently has no suspects in custody as area 2 detectives continue their investigation.
