Authorities in Miami Beach, Fla., have said they no longer want spring breakers to visit the city after two fatal shootings involving partygoers over the weekend.
Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber imposed a curfew in the city Sunday night and said his administration would consider extending restrictions for the coming weekend.
Two people were shot dead in separate incidents over the weekend near the city’s Ocean Drive beachfront, Mr. Gelber said.
At around 10:40 p.m. local time on Friday, Miami Beach Police officers heard gunshots near 7th St. and Ocean Drive, the police department said.
Officers found two men with gunshot wounds. Both were taken to an area hospital where one died. The other man was in critical condition, police said.
On Sunday shortly before 3:30 a.m., officers responded to the sound of gunshots near 11th St. and Ocean Drive. One man was arrested and another died later in hospital.
The initial curfew lasted from midnight Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday and covered a large area of South Beach. Residents needing to travel to or from work were still able to do so, Mr. Gelber said.
The sale of alcohol for off-premises consumption was also banned after 6 p.m. Sunday.
Mr. Gelber said both shootings involved visitors to Miami Beach.
Large visitor numbers, unruly crowds and the presence of guns have made spring break in the city unmanageable, Mr. Gelber said.
