RawNews1st – Detectives spoke with the clerk who was working when this Mobil Station in Riverhead was robbed Sunday evening.
He told me he threw the money at the suspect after opening the register because he thought it would give him his only chance to escape.
It did and it may have saved his life. He got a head start while the robber collected the money.
The suspect —who Riverhead Police have identified as 21-year-old Matthew Pittman — then chased after the clerk, shooting 11 times.

The clerk told me he hid on the ground till he felt it was safe to get up. He was not harmed. Pittman was arrested.
