A man was killed and another was injured during a home invasion shootout in west suburban St. Charles on Saturday.
St. Charles police responded to an apartment in the 100 block of Walnut Drive around 7:37 p.m. for a report of shots fired.
When police arrived, they saw Panagiotis Koutroumbis dragging James Gherardini out of the apartment. According to police, Gherardini was shot in the chest.
Gherardini was taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital and pronounced dead.
During the investigation, police discovered that another man, a 25-year-old man from St. Charles, had been shot and taken to the same hospital before officers arrived.
According to police, Koutroumbis, Gherardini, and at least one other person entered the apartment through an unlocked sliding glass door and allegedly zip-tied the hands of several occupants inside.
Following that, the suspects demanded items from the occupants.
According to police, the 25-year-old St. Charles man who was hospitalized received a phone call just before the shooting from a resident of the apartment.
When the resident arrived, he exchanged gunfire with at least one of the suspects.
According to police, the St. Charles man was shot in the abdomen and is in stable condition in the hospital. Gherardini, 26, of Lindenhurst, died after being shot in the chest.
Koutroumbis, 26, of Lindenhurst, was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder and home invasion. On a $1.5 million bond, he is being held at the Kane County Jail.
His next court appearance is scheduled for January 20.
An additional offender, according to police, fled the scene before officers arrived.
According to police, this was an isolated, targeted attack, and there is no danger to the public.
