A man was charged with shooting his pregnant girlfriend through her front door last month, killing her unborn child.
Melvin Richmond, 30, is charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery, and involuntary manslaughter of an unborn child.
Richmond and the 30-year-old victim have an 8-year-old child, prosecutors say. The victim was 14 weeks pregnant with her fiancé’s child when she was shot.
Richmond took his and the victim’s child to a Christmas party on Dec. 26, according to court documents.
Melvin was driving the child back to the victim’s house in East Garfield Park when Richmond pocket-dialed her, prosecutors said.
The victim allegedly heard Melvin mistreating their child.
Prosecutors say the child saw the offender with a laser-equipped gun in his hand and on the dashboard.
Richmond dropped off the child and entered through the back door.
The victim’s fiancé, son, and nephews were also home.
Prosecutors say the 8-year-old told the victim Richmond yelled at her, so she called him and they argued.
Within minutes, the victim heard Richmond yelling and banging on her front door, prosecutors said.
Richmond allegedly tried to kick in the door, but the victim pushed with her back.
The victim’s fiancé and child were in the living room.
Richmond allegedly fired multiple shots through the front door, hitting the victim in the left flank, right lower thigh, and back.
Richmond fled the home and fired at the victim’s fiance’s unoccupied car, prosecutors said.
Passenger doors were damaged.
She underwent bowel, colon, and gallbladder surgery after emergency personnel arrived.
Prosecutors say the victim miscarried due to trauma.
Prosecutors found three 9mm shell casings outside the victim’s door and seven more near her fiancé’s vehicle. Victim identified Richmond as shooter.
Richmond is jailed.
